Popular St. Lucia Hikes

There is so much to see and experience during your St. Lucia vacation. If you like being active and enjoy the outdoors, you will love the natural wonders this island has to offer. One of the best ways to explore St. Lucia’s nature is by taking a hike. You can do it on your own or with a tour guide. Here are three of the most popular hiking trails:

Tet Paul Nature Trail

This easy to moderate hike takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. It is recommended to do this hike with a local tour guide who will point out native plants, trees and healing herbs long the way. You will also learn interesting facts about the culture, history and nearby villages. Take your camera because you will have plenty of photo opportunities. The trail features breathtaking 360-degree views of St. Lucia’s highest mountain, Morne Gimme, the plains of Vieux Fort and its lighthouse. You will be able to see the nearby villages of Chousiel, Laborie, Soufriere and even all the way to the neighbor islands of St. Vincent and Martinique. Other majestic views along the way include Jalousie Bay, located on the southern shore of the island, Fond Gens Libre, Choiseul, Maria Island and more. Along the hike you will also walk by a working organic farm. Bring your lunch because there is a small picnic area set up for families and groups to stop by and have a meal.

Gros Piton Nature Trail

The Gros Piton Nature Trail is another popular hike that is suitable for beginners (the first half of the trail) and experienced hikers (the second half of the trail, which includes a steep ascent to the summit of Gros Piton). Along the trail you will be surrounded by tropical vegetation, learn about the history and heritage of the island, go back in time and walk in the footsteps of St. Lucia’s first people, the Amerindians. When you reach the summit you will be able to enjoy the awe-inspiring views all around from St. Vincent to the south and Martinique to the north. This is a four hour roundtrip hike and we recommend hiking it with a local tour guide who will take you to a few extra attractions along the way.

En Bas Saut Trail

Located at the foot of the island’s highest peak, Mount Gimie, this hike is ideal for hikers who like venturing into rainforests and be surrounded by thick tropical flora. Since the location is rather remote you can find unique island flora and fauna and see rare species, such as Saint Lucian Parrot and the Saint Lucian Oriole. The hike is 2.5 miles long and is suitable for more experienced hikers. Another popular attraction along the trail are the Enbas Saut Falls, two small cascading waterfalls with pools. The top falls are about 15-20 feet tall with a relatively deep swimming pool, while the bottom falls are higher at 20-25 feet tall with a shallow pool.

St. Lucia – the Most Romantic Honeymoon Destination

Looking for an exotic honeymoon getaway where you can enjoy five star accommodations and personal service? If so, St. Lucia is the place to go. Here you will find luxury private retreats for couples with stunning panoramic ocean and sunset views.  Since the atmosphere on the island is very intimate you will not find mega resorts here. Instead, all accommodation options are unique and personal focusing on adult only services. Because of its honeymoon nature you will find many island providers that will entice you with their custom all inclusive honeymoon packages. Typically such a package includes:

Warm welcome – guests will get picked up and dropped off at departure. Upon arrival to their romantic home, honeymooners will be greeted with a welcome gift that includes a bottle of champagne.

Luxury accommodations – it can come in the form of a special villa, intimate waterfront cottage or a private junior suite in a beachfront resort. What honeymoon packages have in common is they usually feature an open-floor living space with private outdoor pool revealing unobstructed Piton and sea views, which acts as an extra mood enhancer for the couple. Couples will also have access to very discrete butler service.

All inclusive meals and drinks – when a couple plans a honeymoon of such a fine magnitude they usually enjoy all inclusive meal and drink services, including unlimited reservation-free gourmet dining, unlimited wine and premium spirits, gourmet in-suite dining, treats served along the pool and more.

Water and land activities – Honeymooners are welcome to explore the island’s wonders and underwater world. Honeymoon packages include access to private outdoor activities, such as snorkeling for two, sailing on a private catamaran, kayaking, as well nature hiking, biking and island sightseeing.

Honeymoon bonus items – some resorts include special bonus items you can bring home or enjoy while on the island. For example, some packages include a box of chocolate, photo frame, fruit basket, turndown service with rose petals on the first night, or breakfast in bed with fresh flowers. Other resorts offer additional discounts or a resort credit for the couple.

Things to Know Before Visiting the Bahamas

What makes the Bahamas an attractive travel destination to Americans and visitors from around the world is the combination of good weather year round, picture-perfect beaches and the large selection of land and water activities. Getting to the Bahamas is easy and you can either fly here or come on a cruise ship. Here is what you need to know before you come.

Passport requirement

You will need your passport to visit the Bahamas, and it needs to be valid for at least six months after your trip. So if you still need to do some passport arrangements, make sure you give yourself enough time to obtain a passport before your departure date.

Currency

Even though the Bahamas have their own currency (Bahamian dollar), it is of equal value to the American dollar. So changing currency is not necessary. The American dollar is accepted everywhere and you can also use most debit cards and the standard credit cards – Visa, Mastercard and American Express. When you use your card there might be small international transaction fees.

Accommodations

Just like most of the Caribbean islands, the Bahamas are pricey. But you will get what you pay for. There are a few good resorts here, but most visitors prefer the seclusion and privacy of a vacation home. If you plan to stay at a vacation home you will most likely have access to additional services, such as a cook, butler, concierge, etc, so you will not be missing out on what resorts offer.

Activities

The Bahamas is an activity paradise and there is so much to do and see here. Ocean activities range from swimming with sharks and dolphins, snorkeling with colorful fish in the shallow waters of Nassau’s famous reefs, diving and exploring deep walls, fascinating wrecks, blue holes, tunnels and more. If you don’t want to get wet you can still explore the amazing underwater world of the Bahamas by taking an underwater cruise in your own submarine. Another must-do is a sunset dinner cruise where you can enjoy a casual atmosphere on a sailing catamaran, watch the sunset and enjoy a buffet dinner.  For the most adventurous of you, come and parasail over the clear blue crystal waters of Cabbage Beach. This once-in-a-lifetime experience will take your breath away. If you are into land adventures, you will love venturing out on an ATV. This is a unique way to drive through and explore the lush jungle and enjoy panoramic views of the turquoise sea and beautiful shoreline.

Dining

Discovering the Bahamian cuisine is a must-do for everyone who comes here. The Bahamas offers a large selection of dining options, from casual beachfront cafés and award-winning fine dining restaurants to Mom & Pop eateries featuring traditional Bahamian favorites in a laid-back atmosphere. There are even tours that will take you off the beaten tourist path on a delicious culinary adventure through Nassau’s vibrant downtown neighborhood where you will visit and sample local delicacies, including classic conch fritters, baked macaroni and cheese, rum cake and more.

Getting Married in Antigua

Imagine it’s your wedding day – you and your loved one holding hands surrounded by classic Caribbean scenery – palm trees, white sands, azure blue water and a tropical warm breeze creasing your hair. If this is how you have always dreamed of saying “I do”, come visit the island of Antigua. Getting married here is easy, inexpensive and there is no waiting time. There are three easy steps: visit the Ministry of Justice which is located on lower Nevis Street in downtown St. John’s, bring your valid passports, complete the application and pay the application fees (a registration fee of US $40, marriage license fee of US $150 and Marriage Officer’s fee of US $50).

All you need is your valid passport in order to proof your citizenship. If you have had previous marriages, bring a proof of your divorce papers. If you are a widow or widower you will also need to bring your late spouse’s marriage and death certificate. Please bring all original documents. Necessary copies will be made in the Marriage Office. The legal marriage age in Antigua is 18, but if you are lucky to find your loved one earlier and you are 15+ you will also need to present authorization from your parents or guardians.

Depending on the type of wedding ceremony you desire you will also find a large list of island wedding providers that will serve your needs. Most of the island’s resorts have their own wedding packages that come with a discount rate if you stay with them. All ceremonies are both legal and binding. If you choose, you can get marred in a church. You will need permission from the church authorities where you wish to be married. If you have your own pastor you can ask them to establish contact with the church where you wish to perform your wedding ceremony. Keep in mind some churches will require the couple to attend a pre-nuptial consultation. So if you are planning to get married in a church, keep this in mind and plan ahead.

Blue Skies & Big Dreams

Writer, Stacey Alcorn, has a long list of amazing achievements.  She owns one of the largest residential real estate firms in New England, is an attorney, author of a best-selling book called REACH!, writes for the Huffington Post and Entrepreneur Magazine,  AND is a Mom. Whoa!  This woman is super impressive.  Lucky for Blue Sky Luxury Travels she was referred to us by a TV producer/radio DJ, Chuck Nilosek with Life is Great Media, who found us on social media.  She investigated our company, found us unique and fascinating and reached out to see if she could interview me for an editorial piece.  Of course, I agreed!  She wrote an incredible article, Blue Skies & Big Dreams, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the support.  Thank you, Stacey!

In 2010, at 30 years old, she was already having a midlife crisis and was considering a major pivot in her life and career. The recurring question she kept asking herself, “Is it more important to live where you want and find work, or stay where you are climbing a corporate ladder with the hopes of retiring to an amazing place when you’re 60?”

At nineteen years old she launched a career in the music industry after standing on the stage looking out at 30,000 people during a concert of Widespread Panic, access granted from her boyfriend at the time, whose dad was managing the band. Then and there, she decided that she wanted to be on the back end of the concert industry, bringing the biggest artists to people around the world. She then spent her twenties in Nashville promoting and working with such artists as The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Kenny Chesney, Jay Z, The Police, Pearl Jam, Jimmy Buffett, Snoop Dogg, Stevie Wonder, Kayne West, Foo Fighters, Metallica and Tim McGraw. Her most fulfilling job during those years was as tour manager for Steve Winwood in 2004, spending months on the road with him and the band on a tour bus.

By 30, she had achieved her dreams in the music industry and decided it was time to go after another dream. Growing up in Charlotte, North Carolina, her parents often brought her and her brother to the Virgin Islands for vacations. This entrepreneur was craving an adventurous island life, and so, against the advice of her friends and co-workers, she sold all of her belongings, terminated the lease on her Nashville apartment, and used her remaining money to move with her yellow lab, Dakota, to St. John in the US Virgin Islands to start living a new dream.

Her name is Shanna Dickerson and she is the Founder and CEO of Blue Sky Luxury Travels , a boutique travel concierge and event planning business, which caters to luxury travelers and businesses around the world. She and her team locate and rent-out estates, villas, yachts, private islands and jets for clients across the Caribbean and other luxury escapes around the globe. The menu of concierge services is wide as it also includes hiring top chefs, booking private transportation and activities and planning world-class events. In 2010 she moved to St. John with nothing but her dog and a dream. The first two years certainly didn’t come easy. She missed her friends and family and starting a business from scratch in the Caribbean was filled with challenges. But due to her driven personality, her business eventually began to expand. Today, six years later, she’s living between Charleston, SC and the Virgin Islands, while working for A-list clients like Sir Richard Branson. While we live in a world filled with people who are wishing, hoping, and wanting to fulfill a dream someday, Shanna Dickerson took bold steps into the unknown in order to fulfill her dreams today. She left the comfort and security of the life she knew in favor of following a simple dream to build a life in the Virgin Islands.

I recently spent some time with Shanna in an effort to find out what it takes to up and leave one life for another, how to build an empire that caters to the affluent from scratch, and how to find and live your purpose. Here is Shanna Dickerson’s advice on how to chase blue skies and big dreams:

Listen to your intuition: Shanna says that living out your dreams requires listening closely to your intuition. She has a long-standing habit of meditating every morning for 20 minutes so that she can quiet her soul thereby leaving room for messages to resonate from within. Back when she was working in the music industry, she loved her work but had a nagging feeling that she wasn’t fulfilling her potential. She felt as if she was settling for the life she had instead of creating the life she wanted. Her thirtieth birthday led to much reflection and she realized then that she was meant to live on an island in the Caribbean. With that, she sold everything and moved. At the time she didn’t know what she would do when she arrived on St. John, but through contacts with Kenny Chesney who owns a villa there, she was offered an opportunity to stay in the guest house of a large estate on St. John in exchange for helping vacationing residents of the estate with anything they needed. Shanna followed her intuition, embraced the opportunity and Blue Sky Luxury Travels was born.

It Never Hurts to Ask: Shanna says that when it comes to big dreams, you need to be your own best advocate, meaning you must not be afraid to ask others for help along the way. In 2004 she was offered an opportunity to manage a concert tour for Steve Winwood. She had never managed a tour before, but there was no way she was going to turn down the opportunity. Her favorite quote is one by Sir Richard Branson, “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you’re not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later!” Shanna reached out and asked for help and figured out how to manage a tour, and it was one of the most fulfilling jobs she ever had. Later, upon moving to St. John, she reached out to her contacts with Kenny Chesney and as a result she received a once in a lifetime opportunity to live on a prestigious estate helping vacationers, thereby creating her Blue Sky Luxury Travels empire. Her very best example of not being afraid to ask is her encounter with Sir Richard Branson. Ever since starting Blue Sky she had hoped to someday work with him. Two years ago, she was speaking with a mutual friend of Branson’s. And so she asked, “If I write an email to Richard Branson, would you please forward it to him?” Her friend agreed. It was forty-eight hours later when she was playing tennis and checked her email between sets to see if any clients needed her. She could hardly believe her eyes when she saw that Sir Richard Branson himself had emailed her back. That was two years ago, and since then Shanna helps assist with two of his biggest events on Necker Island, The Necker Cup and The Necker Open. Says Shanna, “It’s so much easier to get where you are going if you are driven. Ask for what you want and go after it!”

Deliver: When I asked Shanna about her secret to working with affluent clients, she said it’s simple; “Be available and deliver.” She has a team of people who assist her, but for most of her clients, she is their point of contact and is available for them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. She travels extensively thereby seeing firsthand many destinations and making connections across the globe. When asked if she will scale her concierge empire further, she said, “We will always be very boutique. I never want my clients to feel like a number. We are a family driven business and we truly care about who we work with and strive to build great relationships over time.” The unique adventures she creates for her clients make her brand stand in a world of its own, all of which stem from her love of travel and exploration. One of the greatest aspects of Shanna is that she connects with her clients on a personal level. She also uses social media to share with the world her fulfilling life giving everyone a front row seat while she builds her empire. When I asked about her favorite part of her company she said, “I love being able to inspire people with my story and to bring them together through incredible experiences. When I was in the music business it made me truly happy to bring people together through music. It is that feeling that drove me to start Blue Sky and it’s incredibly fulfilling. When you follow your true purpose in life, somehow the universe conspires to help you.”

Shanna is hard working, driven, and fearless. She’s an example that when you simply take the first step toward achieving your dream, the universe magically assists you along the way. Her blueprint for finding and living your purpose is simple; listen to your intuition, ask, and deliver. She’s Shanna Dickerson and she’s proof that good things come to those who chase blue skies and big dreams.

Stay inspired or find your next adventure. Keep up with Shanna on Instagram and Facebook!
